Seamless Charging Experience

Volvo is streamlining the recharging process for owners of its latest electric SUVs, the EX60 and EX90. By rolling out "Plug & Charge" technology in the U.S. market, the automaker is removing the friction often associated with public charging. Drivers no longer need to rely on smartphone applications or physical credit cards to initiate a session; the vehicle now handles authentication and payment automatically as soon as the cable is connected.

Expanded Network and Compatibility

This initiative is part of a larger industry shift toward creating a more intuitive public charging infrastructure. Once an owner configures their payment details during the initial vehicle setup, the system manages billing behind the scenes. The technology is compatible with a vast network of over 35,000 fast chargers, including major operators such as the Tesla Supercharger network and the Ionna charging platform.

Currently, the feature is active for EX90 owners, while those awaiting the EX60 will gain access upon the commencement of U.S. deliveries later this year.

Hardware Requirements and Integration

For owners of the 2025 model year EX90, there is a specific hardware prerequisite: the vehicle must be equipped with the Nvidia Orin computer. While the 2026 models will include this chip as standard, owners of 2025 vehicles can have the component installed at no cost via a scheduled appointment at a service center. This upgrade is also intended to address earlier software performance concerns.

"Drivers can also find compatible chargers through the built-in Android Automotive operating system or the Volvo Cars app. They don't have to worry about getting deserted on a long drive—the built-in Google Maps will suggest charging stops along the way, calculating the ideal route based on the vehicle's state of charge."

Charging Performance and Infrastructure Growth

The EX60, built on an 800-volt SPA3 architecture, is designed to be one of the quickest-charging vehicles on the market. It supports charging speeds up to 370 kilowatts, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in roughly 19 minutes. In high-power scenarios, the P12 AWD variant can regain approximately 173 miles of range in just 10 minutes. By integrating Plug & Charge, Volvo ensures that this technical performance is matched by a equally efficient user experience.

Despite fluctuations in the wider EV market, infrastructure providers continue to expand their coverage. By focusing on reliability and user-friendly features like automatic authentication, the industry aims to ensure that public charging becomes a convenient and dependable part of the daily driving routine.
