A New Approach to Home Backup Power
Ford Motor Company has unveiled a streamlined method for F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid owners to utilize their vehicles as a reliable source of backup electricity during power outages. This new system aims to eliminate the need for complex rewiring or inconvenient extension cords.
How the Technology Works
The solution relies on the GenerLink, a specialized transfer switch manufactured by Global Power Products. The device is installed directly at or near the home’s utility meter. By connecting the truck's 240-volt Pro Power Onboard outlet to the GenerLink device, electricity is routed directly into the home’s main electrical panel.
According to Ford, the equipment package, which includes a new 12-inch Vehicle Connector, is priced at approximately $1,100. Installation costs typically range between $250 and $450 if the utility provider allows direct meter integration, though setups positioned adjacent to the meter may cost between $1,000 and $1,500.

As extreme weather events, wildfires, and heatwaves continue to threaten the stability of the power grid, energy independence has become a priority for many homeowners. Accessing the large storage capacity of an EV battery provides a practical way to maintain essential services, internet connectivity, and lighting when the grid fails.
Ford stated the following regarding the convenience of the new system:
«Instead of running cords through cracked windows and doors, you can now run a single connection between your truck's 240V Pro Power Onboard outlet and a GenerLink transfer switch installed at or near your utility meter.»
Performance and Future Potential
Ford estimates that an F-150 equipped with a 240V Pro Power Onboard outlet can sustain an average household's energy needs for up to five days, depending on consumption levels. This advancement reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry to integrate vehicle batteries into smart home energy ecosystems, allowing drivers to play a more active role in managing grid demand.
