Drivers paid a nickel for an hour of parking, which triggered a flag to rise, signaling that the spot was reserved. Once the time elapsed, the flag would drop, alerting officials that the vehicle was subject to a citation.

Before the arrival of these meters, Oklahoma City relied on police officers manually marking vehicle tires with chalk to monitor time limits. This system was notoriously inefficient and easy to circumvent. The introduction of the parking meter fundamentally changed urban dynamics by:

In the modern era, these figures have scaled significantly. For example, in 2018, New York City recorded $228 million in revenue from meters alone. Furthermore, parking enforcement remains a massive fiscal pillar for municipalities. Los Angeles, for instance, projects that parking fines alone could generate over $100 million in 2026, dwarfing the income from the meters themselves.


Where Does the Money Go?

The impact of this revenue on local communities is highly variable. The destination of these funds depends largely on local policy. As noted by one observer, the situation is a mixed bag:
