Overcoming Spatial Challenges

The current van conversion project is progressing rapidly, turning a standard Ram Promaster cargo shell into a functional mobile production studio. Navigating the spatial constraints of a vehicle is a complex puzzle, as every millimeter of space is crucial when balancing the requirements for a kitchen, sleeping area, and gear storage.

Recent work focused on finalizing the interior storage. The focus was on ensuring that the slide-out kitchen drawers function smoothly before the installation of the aesthetic cabinet fronts. Once these units are secured, the entire module will be permanently integrated into the vehicle's living area.

The Secret to a Horizontal Bed

The most significant achievement in this phase of the build involved optimizing the sleeping layout. Standard van configurations often force occupants to sleep vertically due to the vehicle's structural metal ribs, which consumes valuable floor space. The goal was to fit a full-size bed horizontally across the rear.

The solution involved a custom modification:

«By creating sunken headboards and recessing custom plywood sections directly into the wall cavities between the metal studs, I gained an additional two inches of clearance on each side of the van.»

While an extra four inches of total width might appear negligible on paper, it is a game-changer for comfort, providing just enough room to stretch out fully after a long day of work.

Moving Toward Completion

The interior is now rapidly taking shape. With the ceiling completed, insulated walls sealed behind timber, and the bench frame positioned, the van is beginning to feel like a living space. Upcoming tasks include finishing the remaining wall panels and completing the bench seating construction, marking the transition from a hollow cargo vehicle to a fully realized mobile home.
