SUVs have firmly established themselves as the vehicle of choice for consumers globally, balancing practicality, cargo space, and a sense of rugged capability. However, the typical SUV buyer rarely prioritizes a massive 12-cylinder engine. Such powerplants are usually reserved for ultra-luxurious grand tourers or high-performance supercars, where the smooth delivery and raw power of a V12 define the driving experience.

It is, therefore, a rarity to find these engines under the hood of an SUV. While models like the W12-powered Volkswagen Touareg or the diesel V12 Audi Q7 existed, they never reached American showrooms. Only five 12-cylinder SUVs have ever been officially sold new in the U.S. Here is a look at those engineering marvels.

1. Lamborghini LM002

The pioneer of the segment, the Lamborghini LM002, was a mechanical beast weighing nearly 6,800 pounds. It featured a 5.2-liter V12 derived from the iconic Countach. While the global version produced 444 horsepower, the U.S.-specific "LM/American" models were detuned to 414 horsepower to comply with emissions regulations. Only 60 of these American variants were ever produced, cementing its status as an elusive classic.

2. Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Entering the market in 2019, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan brought unmatched opulence to the segment. It utilizes a 6.7-liter twin-turbocharged V12. The standard model delivers 563 horsepower, while the Black Badge edition boosts output to 592 horsepower with 627 lb-ft of torque. Despite its massive weight, this SUV achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, all while maintaining a price tag that can easily exceed half a million dollars.

3. Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG

The G-Wagon began as a military vehicle before transforming into a symbol of status. Between 2012 and 2018, Mercedes-AMG offered the G65, equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 producing 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. While its handling was far from ideal for its performance output, the G65 remains a legendary example of automotive excess.

4. Bentley Bentayga Speed

The Bentley Bentayga holds the distinction of being the only SUV with a W12 engine configuration ever sold in the United States. Its twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine provided 600 horsepower in standard trim, while the "Speed" variant squeezed out 626 horsepower. Though production of the W12 engine for the Bentayga concluded after the 2023 model year, it remains a high-water mark for the brand's performance.

5. Ferrari Purosangue

Currently the most powerful 12-cylinder SUV sold in America, the Ferrari Purosangue—marketed by the brand as an "FUV" or Ferrari Utility Vehicle—represents the pinnacle of this niche. Its naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 produces a staggering 715 horsepower without any turbo or hybrid assistance. Starting at over $430,000, it is a testament to Ferrari’s commitment to internal combustion performance.
