A Shift Toward Tactile Interaction

After years of hearing consumer requests for physical controls, Rivian is finally bridging the gap between minimalist interior design and functional ease-of-use. The upcoming 2027 Rivian R2 introduces two haptic 'halo wheels' integrated directly into the steering wheel, allowing motorists to manage essential settings—such as cabin temperature and audio volume—simply by using their thumbs.

During a recent event near Detroit, Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s chief design officer, acknowledged the challenge of satisfying a diverse customer base, noting, «You're never going to make everyone happy. People wanting physical controls.»

The Balance Between Minimalism and Function

When Rivian debuted the R1S and R1T in 2021, the vehicles were characterized by a near-total absence of physical buttons. At the time, this design philosophy aligned with the brand's appeal to tech-forward, early-adopter demographics. CEO R.J. Scaringe remained a vocal proponent of this screen-centric approach, stating last year that the company intended to avoid traditional button clusters.

The new halo wheels represent a strategic middle ground. These controls allow for scrolling, pushing, pulling, and tilting, providing distinct haptic feedback for each input. Crucially, the driver display provides visual confirmation of these adjustments, ensuring that the driver’s eyes remain focused on the road.

«Now you can adjust the fan speed without actually taking your hands off the wheel,» says Jeff Hammoud.

Smart Tech for a Software-Defined Future

The halo wheels are not traditional mechanical switches; instead, they rely on haptic feedback powered by sophisticated software. This allows Rivian to modify or expand the functionality of these controls via over-the-air (OTA) updates, embodying the concept of a software-defined vehicle. While some competitors are opting to return to physical buttons, Rivian’s chief software officer, Wassym Bensaid, emphasizes that these halo wheels are a novel solution designed to provide tactile satisfaction without abandoning the company's forward-thinking aesthetic.

Maintaining the 'Rivian' Identity

The transition to haptic feedback is being framed by the company as a distinctly «Rivian» solution. The brand continues to cultivate its unique identity, characterized by its reputation as an edgy alternative to legacy automakers and its penchant for lighthearted design elements—often referred to as 'Easter eggs'—such as playful graphics hidden throughout the vehicle.

Ultimately, while the haptic halo wheels may require a slight adjustment period for new users, they signify a meaningful improvement in ergonomics. They offer the convenience of physical interaction while maintaining the sleek, uncluttered interior that has become a hallmark of the Rivian brand.
