A New Chapter for Volvo's EV Strategy
While many competitors are scaling back their electrification plans, Volvo remains steadfast in transitioning its lineup to fully electric vehicles. Following the mixed reception of the EX90 and the cancellation of the EX30 in certain markets, the 2027 Volvo EX60 is poised to become the cornerstone of the company’s portfolio. The brand aims to leverage the historical success of the gas-powered XC60 to drive consumer adoption of this new electric contender.
Engineering and Design Innovations
The EX60 marks the debut of the SPA3 platform, an upgrade from the architecture used in the EX90. Volvo has implemented advanced megacasting techniques to reduce vehicle weight and production costs while minimizing its carbon footprint. Furthermore, the SUV is powered by the proprietary “HuginCore” computing system, designed to eliminate the software stability issues that plagued previous models. Notably, the EX60 is the first Volvo EV to be designed, developed, and manufactured in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Torslanda plant.
Performance and Powertrain Options
The 2027 model launches with several powertrain configurations:
- P6: Rear-wheel drive, 369 hp, and 354 lb-ft of torque.
- P10: Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 503 hp, and 524 lb-ft of torque.
- P12: A flagship dual-motor variant arriving late 2026, boasting 670 hp and 583 lb-ft.
During testing, the P6 proved sufficiently brisk for daily driving, while the P10 provided more aggressive acceleration. The transition between motors is seamless, as the vehicle intelligently disengages the front motor to conserve energy during steady cruising.
Digital Experience and Interior Refinement
The interior focuses on a minimalist yet functional design. The driver is presented with a clear 11.4-inch display, while a 15-inch center touchscreen runs a significantly overhauled infotainment system. Volvo has improved usability by adding a contextual hot-key bar and returning physical buttons to the steering wheel. A major highlight is the integration of Google Gemini, which allows for complex voice queries, such as searching for specific amenities, far surpassing standard voice assistants.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety remains a Volvo hallmark. The EX60 features "multiadaptive" seat belts that use sensors to calculate the ideal tension based on the passenger's physique and impact severity. While the active safety features are well-tuned and non-intrusive, the Pilot Assist highway-driving suite remains a weak point, as it feels overly cautious and restrictive regarding hands-on requirements.
Market Positioning and Value
Starting at $59,795 for the P6 Plus, the EX60 is positioned as a direct competitor to luxury electric SUVs like the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC EV. Even the top-tier Ultra trims, priced near $68,000, offer premium value through features like high-end Bowers & Wilkins audio and Nappa leather upholstery. As Volvo continues its electrification journey, the EX60 stands out as its most balanced, practical, and polished product to date.
