A Remarkable Sales Turnaround

After a period of stagnant momentum, the Subaru WRX is undergoing a massive resurgence in the American market. In June alone, Subaru moved 1,233 units, representing an impressive 252.3 percent increase compared to the 350 units sold during the same month the previous year. While these figures are modest compared to high-volume SUVs like the Forester, the growth trajectory is undeniable, with total year-to-date sales climbing 10.5 percent.

The Impact of Pricing Adjustments

A primary factor in this growth is the strategic decision to reintroduce a base trim level. By setting the starting MSRP at $32,495, Subaru has lowered the barrier to entry by over $5,000 compared to the previous model year. This move has resonated particularly well with driving enthusiasts who prefer to purchase a lower-cost platform to customize with aftermarket components.

Subaru has extended these price reductions across the entire 2026 lineup:

  • WRX Premium: Starts at $33,995 (a $3,755 decrease).
  • WRX Limited: Priced from $38,995 (down $3,685).
  • WRX GT and WRX tS: Both models saw a $2,710 price cut, now starting at $44,995.

Overcoming Supply Chain Hurdles

While attractive pricing is a major driver, internal company factors also play a role. According to Aaron Cole, Product Communications Manager for Subaru of America, the year-over-year jump is partly an indicator of returning to normal production levels after a period of significant disruption.

«The sales increase is a little more complicated than 'lower price, higher volume.' This time last summer, WRX volume was very supply-constrained due to planned production shifts in Japan. We had extremely low inventory numbers in Q2 and Q3, and supply only approached normal close to Q4,» Cole explained.

Looking Toward the Future

With inventory pipelines now stabilized and a more competitive pricing structure in place, the brand maintains a positive outlook for the sports sedan. The company believes that by offering better value, the WRX will continue to sustain its momentum throughout the remainder of the year. While some enthusiasts continue to compare modern iterations to the legacy of the STI, Subaru is focused on carving out a distinct identity for the current WRX generation, prioritizing performance value and market accessibility.
