A Grand Finale for the 720S Platform

Since its 2017 debut, the McLaren 720S has been a benchmark in the supercar segment, later evolving into the high-performance 750S. Now, as the production cycle for this architecture nears its end, McLaren is bidding it farewell with the 788HS. Carrying the prestigious 'High Sport' designation, this model stands as one of the lightest and most potent iterations of the platform ever built.

Engine Performance and Engineering

At the core of the 788HS lies a modified version of the M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. It generates 777 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, placing it behind only the specialized Senna LM and Senna GTR LM in terms of pure gasoline output. Weighing in at a dry 2,789 pounds, the car delivers a 0–60 mph time of just 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 mph. The performance is further elevated by a new titanium quad-exit exhaust system, engineered to provide a deeper and more aggressive acoustic profile.

Chassis Dynamics and Braking

The 788HS features a suspension system lowered by 0.19 inches (5mm) at the front, paired with a recalibrated Proactive Chassis Control III system for sharper handling. Borrowing from the McLaren Senna, the vehicle utilizes high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston forged-aluminum monoblock calipers. These are housed within exclusive center-lock Super Lightweight forged wheels, marking a first for the 720S series.

Aerodynamic Upgrades and Interior Tech

To maximize performance, McLaren has overhauled the bodywork. The vehicle includes:

  • A multi-zone front splitter for improved airflow.
  • An S-duct intake to provide the engine with cold, dense air.
  • An active rear spoiler paired with an F1-inspired diffuser, yielding a 10% increase in downforce compared to the 765LT.

Inside, the driver remains the focus, with mode controls mounted on the steering wheel and a column-mounted digital display. The McLaren Control Launcher allows for personalized driving settings, while the interior layout centers around a carbon-fiber console.

Exclusivity and Availability

The 788HS is available in both Coupe and Spider configurations, with the latter omitting the S-duct to accommodate the retractable roof. Production is strictly limited to 200 units worldwide, with each car being hand-finished by McLaren Special Operations (MSO). As a true collector's piece, owners have the option to specify exposed carbon-fiber finishes in either gloss or satin, ensuring that no two vehicles are identical.
