A New Chapter for Subaru's EV Lineup

The all-new Subaru Uncharted marks the manufacturer’s latest step into the electric vehicle segment. Acting as the brand's second fully electric offering after the Solterra, the Uncharted channels the adventurous spirit that has defined Subaru since the introduction of the original Forester. While it brings a unique off-road-inspired aesthetic, the vehicle is built upon a shared platform with the Toyota C-HR+.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

The Uncharted excels in handling, thanks to a rigid battery platform that provides exceptional stability and agility. The suspension setup is tuned for comfort, ensuring a smooth ride for passengers, while the cabin benefits from impressive aerodynamics that minimize wind noise. Drivers looking for excitement will find the top-tier trims particularly responsive, offering sharp, precise steering and the instant torque characteristic of electric motors.

However, the driving experience depends heavily on the chosen configuration:

  • Entry-level: Features a 167 hp front-wheel-drive setup, reaching a top speed of 140 km/h with an 8.4-second sprint to 100 km/h.
  • Mid-range: Offers 224 hp, though it is capped at a 160 km/h top speed.
  • All-Wheel Drive: The performance flagship, delivering 343 hp and achieving a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.2 seconds, complete with specialized driving modes for challenging terrain.

Practicality and Interior Space

Despite being 14 centimeters shorter than the Solterra, the Uncharted maintains a spacious interior. With a 2.75-meter wheelbase, the rear cabin remains comfortable for passengers. The cargo area offers between 403 and 1,323 liters of space, though users will need to manage the dual load floor panels effectively. Notably, unlike some competitors, the vehicle does not provide a front trunk (frunk) for additional storage.

Battery, Range, and Charging

The model is available with two battery options:

A 57.7 kWh battery provides a range of approximately 451 kilometers, while a larger 77 kWh unit extends that range to 592 kilometers.

While the range is competitive, the charging infrastructure on the vehicle is somewhat modest. DC fast charging is limited to 150 kW. However, Subaru highlights a consistent charging curve, noting that a 10% to 80% charge can be achieved in about 28 minutes. Furthermore, the vehicle includes battery pre-conditioning to maintain efficiency in colder climates, reportedly adding only two minutes to the charging time even in sub-zero temperatures.

Verdict

The Subaru Uncharted enters the market as a competitively priced, well-equipped electric crossover. By focusing on a lower center of gravity and providing a more accessible entry point to the electric segment compared to the Solterra, it serves as a solid, if not revolutionary, addition to the compact EV class.
