Mitsubishi is recalling certain Outlander and Outlander PHEV models because the gas springs supporting the liftgate can corrode, lose pressure, and either rupture or fail, allowing the hatch to drop suddenly. This poses a serious injury risk to anyone nearby, especially if their head or hands are in the way.

The recall affects 2014–2020 Outlander and 2018–2022 Outlander PHEV vehicles. According to NHTSA campaign 26V252000, the gas spring cylinders may corrode internally, leading to pressure loss and potential rupture. This expands a previous recall (25V507) after Mitsubishi identified a larger number of affected vehicles.

Owners will receive free replacement of both left and right liftgate gas springs. Notification letters are scheduled for June 17, 2026, and a VIN lookup tool will be available on NHTSA.gov from June 3, 2026. Before then, drivers should watch for warning signs like a sagging liftgate or hissing sounds, and avoid standing under an unsupported hatch.

To check eligibility early, owners can call Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820, referencing campaign SR-26-001, or verify their VIN online after the database updates. The Outlander PHEV, a popular model in North America, is particularly affected, and used car buyers should check their VIN to ensure they receive recall information.
