Safety Concerns and Recall Details

Kia America has initiated a significant recall affecting approximately 463,000 Telluride SUVs. The decision follows reports of fire incidents occurring even after vehicles had undergone a previous round of repairs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has advised owners of these vehicles to keep them parked outdoors and at a safe distance from any structures until the issue is fully addressed.

This latest safety action replaces a prior recall from 2024. The affected models include certain Telluride SUVs manufactured for the 2020 through 2024 model years.

Root Cause of the Fire Hazard

The primary concern involves the front power seat motor, which is susceptible to overheating. According to regulatory filings, a stuck slide knob may trigger this failure. This malfunction poses a potential fire threat whether the vehicle is in motion or turned off and parked.

Following the initial 2024 recall, Kia received complaints from several owners regarding fires originating under the passenger seat. After investigating, the automaker determined that the previous remedy was insufficient due to inconsistent repair work performed at some dealerships. Consequently, Kia decided that a more comprehensive approach was necessary.

Incident Reports and Proposed Solution

Official documents indicate that between October 2024 and April 2026, Kia's safety division tracked 18 separate incidents involving seat motor melting or localized fires. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or accidents related to these incidents.

To resolve the issue, Kia will provide a new, free-of-charge repair: the installation of an electronic fuse assembly. This component is designed to prevent the seat motor from continuing to operate if the switch is damaged or dislodged. The company expects the repair to be available to customers starting in early August, with official notification letters scheduled to reach owners on August 13.

What Owners Should Do

The NHTSA continues to emphasize the importance of safety precautions, stating: «Park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.»

Owners can verify if their specific vehicle is impacted by the recall by visiting the NHTSA’s official website or utilizing the recall lookup tool provided by Kia. The total number of units included in this safety action is 462,869, covering vehicles produced between January 9, 2019, and the present.
