A Strategic Shift in Fleet Operations
Henry Malukas, the founder of HMD Trucking, Inc., is making a significant pivot in his logistics business. After building a fleet of nearly 700 diesel-powered rigs over 28 years, Malukas has officially placed an order for 50 Tesla Semis. This decision marks a major commitment to electric heavy-duty transport for a company that currently relies 99 percent on diesel models.
Founded by Henry and his wife Daiva, HMD has grown into a $250 million enterprise with over 1,000 employees. For Malukas, who spent years behind the wheel himself, the transition to electric is driven by business logic rather than sentimentality. "The owners of the company look at the bottom line," Malukas noted. "When they understand what it does, and the costs and all that stuff, that will take off in the market because there are no emotions involved."
Efficiency, Maintenance, and Operating Costs
While fuel volatility is a concern for the industry, Malukas emphasized that the primary advantages of the Tesla Semi lie in reduced maintenance and overall operating expenses. Unlike traditional diesel trucks, which require constant mechanical upkeep, oil changes, and complex maintenance routines, the electric alternative promises to streamline fleet management significantly.
Malukas is confident in his ability to manage charging needs, utilizing both Tesla’s growing "Megacharger" network and private charging infrastructure currently being developed at his facilities in Chicago.
Winter Logistics and the Electric Advantage
Perhaps the most unexpected endorsement comes regarding cold-weather operations. In regions where temperatures drop to -20 degrees, starting a diesel fleet is a logistical nightmare requiring overnight idling or dedicated crews to manage engine heaters and additives to prevent fuel gelling.
«It’s not much different than 100 years ago; we’re still running with 20 people in the yard with fires to help start the trucks. This Semi is going to change that big time,» Malukas explained.
He believes that preheating the batteries while plugged in at charging stations will effectively mitigate the range loss typically associated with cold weather, while simultaneously eliminating the labor-intensive processes required to keep traditional trucks operational in extreme climates.
A Long-Time Tesla Advocate
Malukas’s conviction in the technology is reinforced by his personal history with the brand. Since 2012, he has purchased 19 Tesla vehicles, ranging from the Model S to the Cybertruck, and has integrated Tesla energy products into his homes. Reflecting on his test drive of the new semi-truck, he expressed high optimism: "I test drove the thing, and it’s a dream. This is a game changer that’s coming, 100 percent."
