While these engines undoubtedly deserve their fame, they often overshadow other masterpieces that powered Japan's golden era of automobiles. Many engines from the 1990s and early 2000s, as well as those from earlier periods, offer exceptional performance and reliability without receiving the same level of global recognition.
Toyota 7M-GTE: The Supra’s Forgotten Predecessor
Before the 2JZ became a household name, the 7M-GTE carried the torch for the third-generation Supra Turbo. Introduced in 1987, this 3.0-liter straight-six utilized a CT26 turbocharger to generate 232 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Featuring an intercooler and an upgraded ignition system, it provided a brisk 0-60 mph time of around 6.4 seconds. Though it was used for only six years, it remains a notable piece of Toyota’s performance history.
Nissan VH45DE: A V8 Contender
In the late 80s, Nissan sought to challenge the dominance of luxury V8s like Toyota's 1UZ-FE. The resulting VH45DE was a 4.5-liter, all-aluminum V8 featuring a forged crankshaft and connecting rods. With an official rating of 277 horsepower, many enthusiasts believe the true output was closer to 300 horsepower, thanks to the era's "Gentlemen's Agreement" that capped advertised power figures.
Mazda 20B-REW: The Triple-Rotor Dream
Perhaps the most elusive engine on this list, the 20B-REW is the only three-rotor engine Mazda ever produced for the mass market. Found exclusively in the JDM-only Eunos Cosmo (1990–1995), it utilized a sophisticated sequential-turbo system. Nissan S20: The First GT-R Heart

Toyota 3S-GE: The "Black Top" Achievement
The 3S-GE evolved through five generations, with the final "Black Top" iteration (1998) standing out as a masterpiece of naturally aspirated engineering. Displacing just 2.0 liters, it produced 200–207 horsepower, successfully hitting the milestone of over 100 horsepower per liter. It was a primary motivator for the Toyota Altezza, proving that naturally aspirated engines could compete with their turbocharged counterparts.
Nissan VK45DE: Torque and Racing Pedigree
The VK45DE succeeded the VH45DE as Nissan’s premier luxury V8. Found in the Infiniti Q45 and M45, it offered up to 340 horsepower and impressive torque. Beyond its luxury applications, the engine was significantly reworked by NISMO for professional racing, where it served as a powerful base for the Super GT and LMP2 Le Mans programs, proving its versatility beyond the street.
