New Seating Configuration for the R1S
Rivian has officially addressed feedback from families and luxury SUV enthusiasts by introducing second-row captain's chairs for the R1S. This addition transforms the three-row SUV, allowing owners to choose between six or seven-passenger seating layouts.
The new captain's chairs are designed with versatility in mind. They are mounted on rails to slide and tilt, facilitating easy access to the third row via a button located on the seat-back. Furthermore, the chairs can fold completely flat, providing a level surface ideal for camping or transporting large cargo. The seats include:
- Heating functionality
- LATCH and top-tether anchor points
- Individual fold-flat armrests
- Integrated, stowable cup holders
Updated Trim and Pricing Structure
The 2027 R1T and R1S models have launched with a streamlined trim hierarchy, now aligned with the upcoming R2 configuration. The lineup is categorized as follows:
- Premium: The new designation for the base dual-motor models.
- Performance: The updated name for the tri-motor variants.
- Quad: Retains its original branding.
Pricing remains consistent with previous models, with the R1T starting at $81,885 and the R1S starting at $85,885, both including an $1,895 destination fee. While the captain's chairs are technically a $1,500 option, they are tied to specific interior packages and trim requirements, which can add between $4,000 and $6,000 to the total vehicle cost depending on selected configurations.
Exterior Enhancements and Availability
Rivian is also refreshing the aesthetic options for the R1 series. A new exterior paint color, Esker Silver—known for its "liquid-metal" appearance—is replacing the outgoing LA Silver. Additionally, a redesigned 20-inch wheel option, paired with Goodyear all-season tires, is now standard for the R1T and available as an upgrade for the R1T Performance trim.
It is worth noting that certain interior styles are now exclusively linked to the six-passenger configuration. Those opting for the R1S Performance or Quad trims with Slate Sky or Ocean Coast interiors will be limited to the captain's chairs setup, as the traditional bench seat will only be available on specific Premium, Performance, and Quad models featuring the Black Mountain Signature interior.
