The RB17 Makes Its Iconic Hillclimb Entrance

Motorsport enthusiasts are set for an auditory treat this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, as the Red Bull RB17 hypercar prepares to tackle the legendary hillclimb. Adrian Newey, the visionary designer behind the project, will pilot the machine, marking a significant milestone for a project first unveiled two years ago.

The RB17 serves as a swan song for Newey’s illustrious tenure at Red Bull. Unlike the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which Newey also designed but had to conform to road-legal regulations, the RB17 was developed as a pure track-only weapon. This freedom allowed Newey to discard technical restrictions, resulting in a machine built purely for raw performance.

Unrestricted Engineering Excellence

The hypercar is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.5-liter Cosworth V10 engine that generates 1,000 horsepower. Notably, the powertrain avoids hybrid assistance, relying entirely on the internal combustion engine to produce what promises to be one of the most aggressive sound profiles in modern automotive history.

Key details of the RB17 program include:

  • Limited Production: Only 50 units will be manufactured.
  • Premium Pricing: Each vehicle carries a price tag of $6.7 million.
  • Dynamic Debut: Alongside Newey, the car will be driven by Red Bull reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda, current racer Isack Hadjar, and F1 Academy driver Alisha Palmowski.

Pushing Beyond the Possible

Red Bull recently completed successful shakedown tests, providing a glimpse of the car’s final production form. According to Rob Gray, technical director at Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the vehicle is the embodiment of the team's philosophy: «At Red Bull, we're at our best when we're taking on challenges that others might consider impossible. RB17 is exactly that. The ambition was to create a car capable of delivering a level of performance rarely seen outside Formula One, while remaining true to the original vision that inspired the project.»

With performance metrics rivaling contemporary Formula One machinery, the RB17 is positioned to become one of the most formidable hypercars ever engineered, offering a rare blend of track-focused capability and a visceral, naturally-aspirated soundtrack.
