A study by Sixt has crowned Kentucky's 'Unbridled Spirit' license plate, introduced in 2004, as the most popular design in the United States. The plate, featuring a blue-white gradient, the state outline, and a charging horse, has sold over 2.1 million units.
Data from state DMVs shows Utah's 'Life Elevated' plate, with an image of Arches National Park, is a distant second with about 1.18 million sales. Another Utah plate featuring a skier ranks third, followed by Michigan's simple blue-and-white design.
California's black-and-yellow '1960s Legacy' throwback plate rounds out the top five. The findings highlight how license plates transcend mere identification to become collected items of regional pride and nostalgia.
