Miami-based startup Chip Motors has officially exited stealth mode, unveiling a unique, doorless electric vehicle intended to offer a practical, American-made alternative to massive SUVs. The vehicle, designed for neighborhood-scale travel, has a top speed of 25 mph and features advanced remote-operation capabilities.
Vehicle Specs and Availability
The company has opened preorders for its debut model, simply named the 'Chip.' This boxy, four-seat electric vehicle carries a starting price of $15,000, with deliveries expected to commence in Florida by 2027. According to co-founder Jameson Detweiler, the vehicle is specifically engineered to bridge the gap between casual golf carts and traditional road-ready automobiles.
Key features and options include:
- A six-seat variant starting at $18,000.
- Customization options such as varying paint colors, additional door configurations, and integrated surfboard racks.
- A 15-kilowatt-hour battery providing an estimated range of 100 miles.
- A compact front trunk for storage.
The 'Chip Go!' Remote Valet Concept
One of the most notable aspects of the Chip is the 'Chip Go!' feature. This technology allows a user to exit the vehicle at their destination—such as a beach or retail store—and have the car navigate to a parking spot via a remote human operator. As Detweiler noted,
“I want this to be the first mass market American robot. It's just going to be on four wheels and sitting in your garage or in your driveway, as opposed to, you know, in your kitchen on two legs.”
Addressing Modern Transport Needs
The rise of the Chip aligns with a broader trend of 'right-sizing' vehicles. As many daily trips consist of short errands, the reliance on gas-powered trucks and SUVs is increasingly seen as inefficient. By utilizing a smaller, purpose-built electric model, owners can significantly decrease fuel costs, eliminate oil changes, and reduce overall maintenance needs due to the simpler design of electric drivetrains.
Safety and Future Autonomy
While the company hopes to eventually achieve Level 4 autonomous driving, current efforts are focused on the implementation of U.S.-based teleoperators. Initially, the remote-driving feature will be restricted to empty vehicles. Chip Motors has stated it will accept liability for any incidents occurring while a teleoperator is in control and is currently coordinating with Florida state and local authorities to ensure a smooth, safe rollout.
