The Evolution of a Supercar Icon
McLaren has officially expanded its portfolio with the debut of the 788HS at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. Positioned between the comfort-oriented GT series and the extreme performance of the Ultimate series, the 788HS arrives as the direct successor to the lineage established by the 720S, 750S, and 765LT. The new model promises significant engineering refinements, offering 37 more horsepower than the 765LT while shedding 26 pounds, resulting in a dry weight of just 2,789 pounds.
Powertrain and Dynamic Performance
At the heart of the 788HS lies the refined M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. This engine architecture, with deep roots in McLaren’s history, has been tuned to deliver exceptional performance. With a redline set at 8,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque, the vehicle is capable of hitting 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reaching a top speed of 205 mph.
The driving experience is further enhanced by bespoke engine mount calibration, which McLaren notes «delivers heightened engagement and connection between powertrain and driver without compromising long-distance usability.» The quad-exit titanium exhaust system ensures that the driver remains immersed in the raw, aggressive soundtrack of the twin-turbocharged engine.
Advanced Chassis and Aerodynamics
The 788HS utilizes the advanced Proactive Chassis Control III, a linked-hydraulic active suspension system that eliminates the need for mechanical anti-roll bars. By using hydraulic fluid to manage body roll, pitch, and heave, the system maintains high-speed stability while ensuring comfort.
Aerodynamic efficiency has seen a 10 percent increase in downforce compared to the 765LT. This is achieved through several innovative features:
- A new S-Duct hood design
- An active rear spoiler
- A Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser
- A bespoke front splitter
Additionally, the 788HS is the first in the Supercar series to feature center-lock wheel mechanisms, paired with high-performance carbon-ceramic discs derived from the Senna.
Market Expectations
While official pricing has yet to be announced, enthusiasts can expect the model to arrive in showrooms next year. Though speculation places the price point significantly higher than the 765LT, official figures will be confirmed closer to the vehicle's market launch.
