Overcoming the Efficiency Hurdle
As electric vehicles (EVs) scale up in size to accommodate families, manufacturers often struggle to balance spacious, boxy interiors with aerodynamic efficiency. Large vehicles naturally face higher energy consumption, which has historically made them less ideal for long-distance road trips.
However, recent real-world testing of the XPENG X9 in Norway indicates that cutting-edge charging technology might be the key to solving this dilemma for the MPV segment.
Impressive Charging Results
A recent evaluation conducted by Out of Spec Roaming focused on the practicality of the XPENG X9 during daily use. The testers utilized an all-wheel-drive version of the vehicle, which is built on an 800-volt architecture and equipped with a 110-kilowatt-hour battery.
During the session on a 500-kilowatt charger, the results were notable:
- Charging time: The vehicle surged from 10% to 80% charge in just 13 minutes and 11 seconds.
- Performance: The test recorded a peak charging speed of 423 kilowatts, with a consistent average of 362 kilowatts.
The testers concluded that for large, family-oriented vehicles, such high-speed charging is essential for viability on long journeys, effectively mitigating the efficiency losses associated with their larger frames.
The Future of EV Road Trips
For many potential EV buyers, the convenience of highway travel remains a primary concern. The performance demonstrated by the X9 suggests that as hardware continues to advance, the anxiety surrounding charging stops during long trips is likely to decrease.
“The only solution for MPVs to be viable on road trips is fast charging,” the reviewers noted, emphasizing that reduced downtime provides families with significantly more travel flexibility.
Industry Trends and Accessibility
Automakers are increasingly adopting 800-volt systems and larger battery packs to enhance the user experience. Even without reaching its theoretical maximum charging capacity of 540 kilowatts, the XPENG X9 provides an exceptional charging experience on current public infrastructure.
Beyond the convenience of ultra-fast public charging, the transition to electric mobility continues to offer benefits, including reduced maintenance requirements and lower fuel costs compared to traditional combustion-engine vehicles. As charging technology evolves, the integration of these features ensures that consumers no longer have to sacrifice passenger comfort for the sake of sustainability and efficient road travel.
