Enhanced In-Car Audio Experience

Volvo has announced a significant update for its vehicle lineup, introducing native support for Apple Music across a wide range of recent models. This integration allows users to enjoy one of the world's most popular streaming platforms directly through the car's built-in infotainment system, eliminating the need for smartphone mirroring.

The addition of Apple Music expands the list of available services, joining existing options like Spotify, Tidal, and YouTube Music. A major highlight of this integration is the inclusion of support for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio tracks, which are designed to leverage Volvo’s sophisticated speaker configurations to provide a more immersive listening experience.

Technical Integration and Availability

Previously, Volvo owners who wanted to use Apple Music were required to connect their smartphones to the vehicle via secondary methods. By moving to a native app running on the Android Automotive-based platform, the experience becomes much more seamless. Following the over-the-air update, users simply need to log in to their Apple account to begin streaming.

The update covers a broad range of Volvo vehicles manufactured from 2020 onwards. Additionally, the forthcoming Volvo EX60 is expected to arrive this summer with the service pre-installed. To mark the launch, Volvo is offering a three-month free trial for new Apple Music users.

High-Fidelity Sound in Electric Models

The integration is particularly beneficial for models equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, such as the EX60, EX90, and ES90. The interior quietness of these electric vehicles complements the high-fidelity audio capabilities, resulting in an enhanced acoustic environment for passengers.

While it remains unclear whether this update is a result of specific collaboration between Volvo and Apple or part of a wider initiative by Google’s Android Automotive platform, it is a significant improvement for the brand’s digital ecosystem. Given the shared platform architecture, it is plausible that sibling brand Polestar may introduce similar functionality in the near future.
