While every vehicle has a maximum «wading depth»—the water level a manufacturer deems safe to cross—experts generally advise against pushing these limits. As a baseline rule, organizations like the AA suggest avoiding water that exceeds four inches in depth for any vehicle, as this is the point where control can be compromised.

Different models have varying tolerances based on their ground clearance and mechanical sealing:

  • Tesla models: Generally cited at around 32 inches.
  • Tesla Cybertruck: Rated up to 32.5 inches.
  • Nissan Leaf: Tested for up to 27.5 inches.
  • Ford F-150 Lightning: Capable of wading up to 24 inches.
