The Challenge of Affordable Luxury
With the average price of a new vehicle exceeding $50,000, factory-fresh cars are becoming increasingly inaccessible for many consumers. Even the pre-owned market presents financial hurdles, as typical used vehicle prices often hover above $27,200. Finding a high-end luxury vehicle that balances affordability with mechanical dependability is a difficult task.
However, recent data from Consumer Reports (CR) points to one manufacturer that consistently stands above the rest: Lexus. Known for its top-tier reliability, the brand regularly competes with mainstream leaders like Toyota and Subaru for the highest spots in dependability studies.
Top Picks for Used Luxury
While Consumer Reports defines a “cheap” vehicle as one costing under $15,000, many of the most reliable used Lexus models can be found for under $20,000. Among the standout choices are the 2015 Lexus GS, the 2015 Lexus ES, and the 2014 Lexus ES Hybrid. All three vehicles have earned the "CR Recommended" status.
The 2015 Lexus GS
The 2015 Lexus GS is lauded by CR for its exceptional reliability. Though the model was phased out after 2020, the 2015 version remains highly sought after due to its updated infotainment interface. Equipped with a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, the base GS 350 features rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option. Depending on mileage and vehicle history, these models typically retail between $13,000 and $16,000.
The 2015 and 2014 Lexus ES
The ES sedan from the same era is another reliable contender. While it ranks slightly lower in dependability than the GS, it still performs well above average. The 2015 ES utilizes a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, while the ES had a lower initial MSRP than the GS, used prices remain comparable, reflecting the model's slower depreciation.
The 2014 ES Hybrid (ES 300h) is also frequently recommended. Powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 200 horsepower, this model offers a compelling mix of efficiency and durability, generally trading for around $15,000 for well-maintained examples.
How Lexus Compares to Other Luxury Brands
When assessing the 2015 model year as a benchmark, Lexus places seven different models into the "above-average" or "very good" reliability categories. Beyond those already mentioned, the RX, RX Hybrid, NX, and the CT 200h hatchback all make the list. This is the highest number of reliable models among the 15 luxury brands analyzed by Consumer Reports.
In contrast, most other luxury manufacturers struggled to have their 2015 vehicles meet the above-average reliability threshold. According to the data, Acura follows with three qualifying models, while Porsche offers two. Other premium brands, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, only had single models meeting the criteria. Notably, none of these competing models reached the “very good” reliability rating assigned by Consumer Reports to the top Lexus vehicles.
