BYD's decision to equip its most affordable electric cars with lidar technology has been met with skepticism from a prominent EV commentator. In a video released on May 14, Sam Evans, host of The Electric Viking, argued that this move may generate more marketing hype than tangible benefits for drivers.
Evans criticized the installation of costly sensing hardware in ultra-budget vehicles, suggesting it misses the key priorities of price-conscious buyers: affordability, driving range, and reliability. He specifically pushed back on reports about BYD fitting the BYD Seagull and other low-cost models with lidar, calling the idea “completely pointless” for entry-level consumers and claiming some media coverage overstated its significance.
The commentator's core argument was straightforward: adding lidar alone does not create a fully self-driving car. He stated the technology could increase vehicle costs without delivering real-world advantages, particularly in the cheapest EVs available. “Putting lidar on a car does not suddenly give it the amazing ability to self-drive,” Evans said, later adding, “You pay more money essentially for nothing.”
Evans suggested that for entry-level buyers, standard accident prevention systems, which use cameras to provide warnings or minor steering adjustments, are sufficient. He noted lidar only provides value when paired with excellent, driver-utilized self-driving technology. While reports indicate the lidar upgrade is optional and costs several thousand dollars, it does enable BYD’s self-driving tech. BYD’s likely aim is to make safe self-driving accessible to a wider audience. However, Evans believes the move is primarily for marketing appeal, showcasing high-tech features.
Evans compared the approach to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s view that self-driving does not require lidar, though he avoided addressing whether lidar could enhance safety, not just enable autonomy. Many automakers still use lidar, which uses lasers to detect objects in conditions like fog where cameras struggle, as a safety aid rather than a pure self-driving enabler.
Evans questioned whether budget EV shoppers are even seeking advanced autonomous hardware. He believes consumers looking for low-cost electric cars are more focused on upfront price and long-term ownership costs than on sensor-heavy driver assistance features they may rarely use. The discussion is significant because affordable EVs are crucial for helping drivers transition from gas-powered vehicles. Practical benefits like lower fuel costs, fewer oil changes, and reduced maintenance often drive their appeal. Packing entry-level EVs with costly hardware that does not clearly improve the ownership experience could undermine their core value, as even modest price increases matter to budget-conscious buyers.
