Evolution of the Lexus Cabin

For years, the Lexus ES has served as the gold standard for serene, reliable, and comfortable commuting. With the 2027 model year, Lexus has completely reimagined its signature midsize sedan, moving beyond traditional internal combustion engines to offer both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. During a recent preview event in Detroit, we had the opportunity to examine the interior of the new ES 350e EV variant to see how these changes translate to the driver experience.

Dual-Screen Sophistication

Lexus has officially moved past traditional analog instrument panels, opting instead for a modern, dual-display configuration designed for optimal clarity. The interior now emphasizes personalization and streamlined access to information.

  • Digital Instrument Cluster: A 12.3-inch display comes standard, providing essential driving data with high precision. Drivers can toggle through various layouts, including classic double-dial configurations, directly via steering wheel controls.
  • Central Infotainment: A sprawling 14-inch touchscreen dominates the center console. This interface utilizes Lexus's latest software suite, which represents a massive performance jump compared to previous generations and shares a lineage with the latest systems found in new Toyota vehicles.

Intuitive Tech and Responsive Software

The standout feature of the new cabin is the overall responsiveness of the operating system. System latency has been virtually erased, creating an experience that feels as fluid as using a modern smartphone.

Key software improvements include:

“A highly customizable home screen allows users to pin and organize their favorite widgets, ensuring that frequently used functions are always just a tap away.”

Furthermore, a persistent quick-access menu located at the top of the screen simplifies daily adjustments, such as display brightness, night-mode toggling, and wireless smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). Safety system configurations (ADAS) are also significantly easier to manage, allowing drivers to toggle features on or off without digging through complex, multi-layered digital menus.

Ergonomic Refinements

Lexus has balanced futuristic technology with tactile physical feedback. Beneath the center display, the cabin features integrated switches that provide a satisfying click when used but remain nearly invisible and flush with the trim when inactive, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic.

In the center console, gear selection is controlled via a compact, stubby electronic shifter. While this design is intuitive and keeps the console area tidy, some users may find that the physical footprint of the shifter occupies space that could have potentially been utilized for additional storage. Nevertheless, it remains a user-friendly solution for daily operation.
