Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electrified lineup with the introduction of the 2027 C-Class EV. Departing from the platform of its combustion-engine predecessor, this new model is built upon the 800-volt MB.EA architecture, mirroring the foundation of the GLC crossover. The C400 4Matic launch models feature two permanently excited synchronous motors, delivering 483 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Performance is brisk, with a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds.

The vehicle prioritizes convenience, offering DC fast-charging capabilities that bring the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in approximately 22 minutes. According to Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius, the company remains committed to serving both internal combustion and electric markets for at least the next decade, ensuring the brand can adapt to the varying pace of global electrification.


Design and Interior Craftsmanship

The electric C-Class features a distinct aesthetic, characterized by a bold front end and a unique smoked glass grille, which can be illuminated with over 1,000 individual light elements. While the exterior styling aims for a sleek, coupe-like profile, the sedan maintains generous headroom for passengers. Inside, the cabin focuses on a “welcome home” atmosphere, utilizing sustainable materials like recycled plastics and compressed paper rather than traditional high-gloss surfaces.

A standout feature is the optional 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, providing a highly responsive and vibrant interface. Notably, Mercedes has listened to user feedback by retaining physical controls, including a tactile volume roller on the center console and intuitive buttons on the steering wheel, marking a return to user-friendly ergonomics.


Comfort and Safety Tech

The ride quality is bolstered by the optional Airmatic air suspension, which includes predictive damping to smooth out road imperfections. For those prioritizing environmental consciousness, the vehicle offers a fully vegan interior, verified by The Vegan Society. Furthermore, the climate control system is optimized for EVs, allowing for near-instant interior heating. The safety suite remains top-tier, featuring advanced emergency braking systems that proved highly effective during rigorous track testing.


The AI Dilemma

Despite its luxurious amenities, the new MBUX Virtual Assistant presents a significant challenge. During testing, the system proved prone to unwanted interruptions. The AI, designed to be helpful, frequently misinterprets private conversations or song lyrics as signs of emotional distress, inserting itself into the driver's environment with unsolicited, clinical advice. While Mercedes offers a degree of customization for the interface, the assistant's tendency to "barge in" on conversations remains a frustration. As one tester noted, the system appears to prioritize being overly vigilant at the expense of natural human interaction within the cabin.
